Physiotherapy (holistic) - Barbara Hummel

Moving through the pain or rubbing an injured area quite often works, but for more persistent problems you would need more specific advice, maybe from a physiotherapist.
Barbara Hummel MSCP OCPPP qualified in 1985 from the college of physiotherapy at theLMU University of Munich – Germany. She has long standing experience in the treatment of musculo-skeletal and orthopaedic disorders and works in private practice and at the Glenmore Lodge Sportsinjury Clinic. Barbara is a chartered physiotherapist registered with the Health Professions’Council.

What is holistic physiotherapy?

During the detailed assessment Barbara usually tries to get a clearer picture of the problem causing factor by looking at the person as a whole, not just the ‘problem area’. This is usually done through questions and detailed examination, including specific tests.
The most effective treatment modality is chosen and explained to the patient and can include massage, heat or ice, active movement or certain mobilising or manipulative techniques.
Ultrasound, acupuncture or low level laser therapy can speed the healing process and provide natural pain relief.. Appropriate exercises are usually given as well, because teaching the patients what they can do to help themselves is as important in physiotherapy as manual therapy.

Barbara also includes complementary techniques like Yoga and reflextherapy in her approach and uses herbal oils and ointments. She sees herself as a very hands-on physiotherapist, but equally enjoyes her role as assessor for Access to Work or as a trainer for ergonomics and posture-solutions in offices.

Massage

As massage is an integral part of the physiotherapy training in Germany, it is recognised there as a very effective tool for prevention or treatment of musculo-skeletal disorders as well as for relaxation. Barbara’s massage skills include Swedish and remedial massage, as well as connective tissue manipulation and special sport massage techniques.
