Shiatsu (sometimes described as acupressure or acupuncture without needles) is a complementary therapy developed in Japan and is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In the oriental view, all physical and emotional problems are regarded as disruptions in the body's flow of life energy (called Chi or Ki). Ki has been found to flow along channels (meridians) that are linked to and influence the functions of the organs. A shiatsu treatment is based on an assessment of the individual's current physical and emotional condition. It involves the application of relaxing and/or invigorating pressure with thumbs or hands and may also include gentle exercises and stretching. You wear socks, loose trousers and top and lie on a comfortable mat on the floor.
The treatment stimulates circulation, lymphatic flow, hormonal and nervous systems.
It improves joint mobility and releases toxins and deep tensions. The flow of Ki is harmonised, allowing self-healing to take place.
Jill completed a 3-year course with the British School of Shiatsu-Do in Liverpool and London, graduating in 1998. She then practised in Shropshire until she joined the Riverdale team after relocating to the Highlands in 2006.
The soothing power of touch is the essence of shiatsu.
